Created through fire, smoke and chance, this one-of-a-kind Raku bottle by ceramic artist Bob Smith showcases the rare ferric chloride firing technique.

The tall, graceful form glows with layers of fiery orange, amber and red beneath a fine crackled surface. Near the base, dark smoke and straw markings create spontaneous patterns that make this vessel impossible to duplicate exactly.

Ferric chloride Raku requires multiple firings. While the pottery is still glowing hot, ferric chloride is applied to develop its distinctive amber and orange tones. The piece is then placed in a straw-filled chamber, where smoke penetrates the crackled glaze and creates its characteristic dark markings and imprints.

Used by very few potters, this specialized process makes every finished surface genuinely one of a kind.
