Jerold Guy is a Navajo artist known for his distinctive hand-carved Long Hair figures created from cottonwood. He is of the Red House Clan, born for the Bitter Water Clan of the Navajo Nation.

Guy taught himself to carve in 1991 and has been creating his distinctive carvings ever since. His work begins with the natural character of the cottonwood itself. Rather than forcing every piece into the same form, he uses the natural bends of the root to help shape the design and personality of each individual carving.

One of the most recognizable elements of Guy's work is his intricate surface treatment. Fine lines are carefully burned into the wood to create detailed patterns and texture. Bright hand-painted colors are then incorporated throughout the carving, creating a striking contrast against the dark, richly patterned wood.

Because the natural form of the cottonwood influences each carving, every Jerold Guy piece is individually shaped and one of a kind. His work ranges from smaller collectible carvings to impressive large-scale pieces, which he especially enjoys creating.
